Smart Home Troubleshooting Made Easy: Introducing the 1Home Traffic Monitor

When working with KNX, many integrators rely on ETS diagnostics to monitor bus traffic. While ETS is powerful, it has its limitations: not the friendliest UI, no history view, difficulty tracing where traffic originates, and challenges when explaining system behavior to customers.
That’s why we have introduced the Traffic Monitor in the 1Home dashboard - a simple yet powerful tool that lets you see both live KNX traffic and its history, along with system-level insights about what triggered each action.
Getting Started
Traffic Monitor is accessible on the left side of 1Home Dashboard under the new section “Insights”.
You have two different tools at your disposal. KNX Monitor and System Monitor. We’ll explore the differences and strengths between them.
KNX Monitor - Live KNX Bus Traffic
KNX Monitor allows you to view traffic coming from the KNX Bus, and which group address or Linked device the data is coming from.
But, it’s not only about watching the traffic. With the KNX Monitor you can also send telegrams to the bus. You can read group addresses to check device status or write values to trigger changes, then immediately see the response come back.
You can search and filter by specific devices or group addresses, and when you need to look back, History mode allows you to search traffic weeks or even months into the past, filtered by time range, device, or group address.
Beyond KNX: The System Monitor
Sometimes knowing what happened on the KNX bus is not enough. You also need to understand why. This is where the System Monitor comes in.
The System Monitor shows all device changes in your 1Home project, including where the change originated. Was it triggered by a push button? A 1Home automation?
With this visibility, you can trace every action back to its source.
You can toggle KNX traffic alongside system changes, apply filters to specific devices, and even show change requests in real time.
For example, if a client uses the mobile app to switch a kitchen light, the monitor clearly displays that the request came from the app, followed by the KNX telegram and the updated device state.
As with KNX Monitor, all of this can be viewed in history mode, making it easy to answer the classic client question: “Why did the blinds open yesterday at 5 p.m.?” Now you can provide a confident explanation every time.
Practical Example: Tracing a Light Change
Let’s say a customer wonders why their kitchen sink light turned off.
- In the System Monitor, filter for “Kitchen Sink Light.”
- When the light is toggled in the 1Home Mobile App, the monitor clearly shows:
This step-by-step view makes it easy to explain system behavior and build customer trust.
Local Data, Full Transparency
All monitoring data is stored locally on the 1Home Server in your project. Nothing is sent to the cloud. This ensures privacy and reliability, while still giving you the insights you need to maintain and support your installations.
And this is just the beginning. The same data that powers Traffic Monitor can also be visualized in custom graphs, giving you even deeper insights into how your system behaves over time.
